2011 Scholarships Awarded to Promising Young Communicators

The Seattle chapter of the Association for Women in Communications has awarded four young women communicators with scholarships.

Because of the excellence of the field of applicants this year, the chapter decided to award four scholarships instead of the usual one or two. Those receiving Seattle AWC scholarships for the 2011 – 2012 academic year are:

Tallie Mattson (Cashmere) is a Communications major/Spanish minor Washington State University. She is active in several organizations including the WSU Horticulture Club, WSU News Service and the WSU chapter of Women in Communications, taking on the presidency of that group through next year.

Heather Perry (Puyallup) of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma is a Journalism/Communications major with the goal of working at a newspaper and/or a nonprofit organization such as World Vision, using communications to bring further understanding to the public around issues affecting the community and the world.

Gina Cole (Kirkland) of Western Washington University has worked on and off-campus in print and broadcast journalism and will be editor-in-chief of The Western Front, WWU’s student newspaper this fall. She is devoted to both print and public radio storytelling – and the intersection of these, online media.

Molly McGill (Granite Falls) is a Journalism major/German minor at Seattle University. Molly has interned at commercial and public radio stations and volunteered for several organizations on and off-campus. After graduation, Molly hopes to complete a Master’s degree and then work in broadcast journalism.

AWC Seattle also congratulates the recipients of two scholarships honoring former AWC members and endowed through the University of Washington (UW). These scholarships are awarded to UW communications students. This year’s winners are Meredith Stager (Cassie Lewis Bryant scholarship) and Azusa Uchikura (Marty Wilson scholarship).
