AWC Student Chapters
AWC has its roots at the University of Washington (UW), where a group of women journalism students founded the organization in 1909 as Theta Sigma Phi. In nearly 100 years, the organization has evolved from a collegiate women’s journalism sorority into a strong national network of communicators representing a broad range of disciplines.

Today, there are professional and student chapters across the country. In Washington state, there are AWC student chapters at the UW and Washington State University (WSU).

The AWC Student Chapter at the UW welcomes all communications students—any student from another Puget Sound-area college or university is welcome to join the AWC Student Chapter at the UW.

2008-2009 School Year Scholarships
The Seattle Professional Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications will award two scholarships to Washington college students. Each scholarship will be approximately $1,500 and applications will be accepted through March 17, 2008. If you are interested in applying for one of these scholarships, please take a minute to read over the following eligibility requirements.

Eligible students must meet the following qualifications:

• Be a Washington state resident
• Be a registered student at a Washington state four-year college for Fall 2008 (applicant may be a sophomore at a community or two-year college during the Fall 2008/Winter 2009 application period)
• Be a junior, senior, or graduate student as of Fall 2008
• Be accepted in, or applying to a school at a four-year university or college to major in at least one of the following communications disciplines:
  • print and broadcast journalism
  • television and radio production
  • film; advertising
  • public relations
  • marketing
  • graphic design
  • multimedia design
  • photography
  • technical communication

Scholarship selections will be based on:

• Demonstrated excellence in Communications
• Positive contributions toward Communications on campus, in the community
• Scholastic achievement
• Financial need
• Work Samples
  **Two work samples: If applicant is a student studying journalism, advertising, public relations, broadcasting or technical writing, please submit two (2) writing samples. If applicant is a student in the disciplines of graphic or multimedia design, please submit one (1) sample of your work in that discipline and one (1) writing sample.

   (Photocopies are acceptable; please do not send transcripts separately)
4. A current resume
5. Two samples of your work
   (If you wish samples returned, you must enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope of appropriate size and include correct postage for the material.)
